Bison burgers have quickly risen as one of my favorite foods. Bison is healthy and delicious, but can also be expensive. I did my best to battle the costliness of these Healthy Bison Burgers by “stretching” my ingredients to get the most bang for my buck. I made 1/4 burgers seem slightly bigger by mixing some mushrooms into the ground bison mixture. Mushrooms have a great meaty texture and take on the flavor of the burger, and it worked like a charm in this recipe. The one watch out with mushrooms is that they absorb water, so make sure to soak them in some olive oil to prevent them from making your burgers dry.

How to make a Healthy Bison Burgers at home

To make these burgers, first mix together the bison, mushrooms, salt and pepper and form the mixture into four even patties. The key to making perfect burger patties is to make them thin, and to press a small dimple in the middle of the patties. This trick will help keep your patty thin and prevents unwanted meatball burgers from forming, as burgers have a tendency to “fatten” in the middle when cooking.

These Healthy Bison Burgers are juicy and full of flavor, but also pretty good for you. Bison has some awesome health benefits, here are just a few:

  4. High in B12 Vitamins

Let’s get economical with these Healthy Bison Burgers:

  • 1 lb bison – $11.99
  • 2 oz mushrooms – $1.99
  • 4 Pretzel Buns – $3.50
  • 1 tbsp olive oil – $0.18
  • Salt and pepper

The grand total is $17.66. Which breaks down to about $4.42/burger.

Is this the most affordable burger you will ever eat? Nope, but I like to spend my money on quality ingredients (when I do spend more money), and this is definitely worth the spend. You could also go sans pretzel bun and save a couple bucks there too (pretzel buns were more expensive this time compared to when I made Asian Dijon Turkey Burgers).

I recommend picking up these common burger additions too:

  • 1 small head of butter lettuce – $0.50
  • 1 tomato – $0.75
  • 1/2 onion – $0.50
  • 1 tbsp Dijon Mustard – $0.09

This will add roughly $1.84 in costs, and bring your burger cost to about $4.88 a pop. Still under $5 for a burger with some high quality grass-fed bison, which will run you $12+ at most restaurants.

Last but not least, you could also add an avocado, which never hurts. This would cost you about a $1.50 total, bringing the grand, grand total to $5.25/burger.

Healthy Bison Burgers

Healthy Bison Burgers are a simple and nutritious lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

    Burger:
  • 1 lb bison
  • 2 oz mushrooms
  • 4 pretzel buns
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
    Fixings:
  • 1 small head of butter lettuce
  • 1 tomato
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 avocado

Instructions

  1. Finely chop your mushrooms. Then, soak the mushrooms in half your olive oil for about 10 minutes.
  2. Add your bison, soaked mushrooms and a pinch of salt and pepper to a large mixing bowl. Mix together until it is all well incorporated. Then, form four even and thin burger patties, making sure to put a small dimple in the middle of every patty.
  3. Heat a grill pan over medium heat with the rest of your oil. Add your four patties to the pan and cook for about 2 minutes. Then, flip the patties and cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until they are medium rare or medium.
  4. Let the burgers rest while you prep your fixings and toast your bun. Assemble your burger to your liking!
